About TRONA

Trona is a psych/kraut band from San Francisco. The sound of the band brings together echoing bass, otherworldly guitar, analog synth textures and steady, hypnotic drums both acoustic and electronic. The band’s four members are all veterans of the San Francisco rock underground: Greg Turner (Chantigs), Elton Cunniffe (Chantigs), Greg Piper (Horsepucky, Burners), and Bill Fisher (Cubby Creatures).

In the year prior to forming the group, Bill Fisher and Greg Piper had been helping their longtime friend Elton Cunniffe, founder and owner of Light Rail Studios, to throw underground parties by creating psychedelic visuals projected behind bands performing in the studio’s cavernous main recording room. In early 2024, when Fisher asked Cunniffe if he knew anyone interested in playing some psychedelic krautrock, Cunniffe immediately suggested their mutual friend Greg Turner for his ability to create transportive sonic textures on guitar. Fisher suggested calling in Piper for the drums, and thus Trona was quickly born, with Fisher on bass and Cunniffe on analog synths.

While inspired by a wide scope of psychedelic music ranging from Butthole Surfers to King Tubby to the classic krautrock of Neu!, Harmonia, Can and Kraftwerk, the members of Trona have sought to go beyond these influences to push the boundaries of the contemporary neo-psych genre, while at the same time clearly touching on neo-kraut and post-punk.

Trona’s first 12” vinyl record, a 4-song EP, will be released by the end of 2024.
